National Insect Week returns in 2020
Sunday, July 1, 2018 - 10:00 to 17:00
Our house team is always on the hunt for bugs that could damage our collection. With 10 to find, join the trail to see if you can spot our big bugs hiding in the rooms of the house.
The outdoor trail features both welcome and unwelcome garden guests with 10 in total to find. Look out for our information panels to find out more about the good, bad and the ugly.
See if you can spot our two new insects including a hummingbird hawk moth and a sabre wasp.
Our gardens and outbuildings are fully accessible with ramped wheelchair access to the gardens. The paths in the garden are fine loose gravel.
Assistance dogs are welcome.
There are lots of contenders here – possibly the pretty red and blue rove beetle Paederus – very, very tiny amounts of its poison have been used to cure chronic ulceration in people. Ladybirds are pretty poisonous (and pretty) and can bleed foul-tasting poisonous brightly coloured blood from their knees.
