National Insect Week returns in 2020
Monday, June 18, 2018 - 10:00 to 17:00
Our butterfly house is an adventurous step into the tropics.
With hundreds of colourful butterflies and beautiful tropical plants, there is always something new to see.
Learn about the life cycle of this awesome insect or simply relax and enjoy a little bit of paradise, in the heart of Hanwell.
You can walk right though the enclosure, with the butterflies flying free and feeding on fruits and nectar from all of the beautiful flowers.
We discourage touching, as their wings are very sensitive, but if you wear something bright enough, they might just land on you to say hello.
There are lots of contenders here – possibly the pretty red and blue rove beetle Paederus – very, very tiny amounts of its poison have been used to cure chronic ulceration in people. Ladybirds are pretty poisonous (and pretty) and can bleed foul-tasting poisonous brightly coloured blood from their knees.
