National Insect Week returns in 2020
Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 10:00 to 17:00
Take some time to relax and take in the beauty of the hundreds of brightly coloured butterflies of all sizes as thee fly around the amazing purpose-built hothouse.
These are some of the most stunning butterflies from all over the world – see them hatch out in the special climate-controlled cabinet, see them glide through the foliage and watch as they feed on fruit and flower nectar.
Enjoy too the amazing display of tropical flowers and plants – simply stunning!
Listen to the water cascade into the fish pool, relax and remember to take some of the best photos ever.
There are lots of contenders here – possibly the pretty red and blue rove beetle Paederus – very, very tiny amounts of its poison have been used to cure chronic ulceration in people. Ladybirds are pretty poisonous (and pretty) and can bleed foul-tasting poisonous brightly coloured blood from their knees.
