National Insect Week returns in 2020
Sunday, June 24, 2018 - 10:30 to 15:00
We're heading to Southampton to this country park of water meadows, ancient woodland and grazing pasture at the side of the River Itchen, hoping to find Southern Damselfly (Coenagrion mercuriale) on the wing and also as a larva.
Meet at 10:30 at Itchen C.P. Visitor Centre, Allington Lane, West End, SO30 3HQ (SU461159).
Bring lunch (or available at the visitor centre café), and good boots.
Parking charges apply - £4.30 for 4 hours.
There are lots of contenders here – possibly the pretty red and blue rove beetle Paederus – very, very tiny amounts of its poison have been used to cure chronic ulceration in people. Ladybirds are pretty poisonous (and pretty) and can bleed foul-tasting poisonous brightly coloured blood from their knees.
