A lifelong wildlife devotee who became a household name fronting The Really Wild Show,
Chris Packham said he is delighted to lend his support to National Insect Week:
“I’m pleased to be involved with such a worthwhile initiative because it’s
crucial that we spread the message about just how important insects are in maintaining
the delicate balance of the ecosystem.”
Joan Ruddock said: “This week's celebration of insects is a fantastic opportunity to
remind us of these often overlooked creatures that make-up three quarters of the world's life
forms, and are invaluable for agriculture, medicine, and even our gardens.
"Research is essential so we can get our conservation actions right. Over recent years
bumblebee numbers have declined dramatically, but the Buzz Report shows that by planting pollen
and nectar rich field margins, farmers (through schemes such as Environmental Stewardship)
can make a real difference to their numbers."
The Royal Entomological Society’s President, Professor Lin Field said: “What
everyone in the Royal Entomological Society shares is a fascination with the wonderful world
of insects, and National Insect Week is all about helping to spread that interest and
fascination as widely as possible.”
