National Insect Week returns in 2020
The National Biodiversity Network is working to provide internet access to a ‘data warehouse’ of UK biodiversity information – past, present and future. It is collating data from local records centres and from national databases (such as the Biological Records Centre) using a standardized format to allow users to search the combined records and view the UK distribution of species (and the changes in distribution with time).
Female water snipe flies Atherix ibis clasp each other and cluster in big round aggregations on the end of branches overhanging rivers – males entering the swarms are mated repeatedly until they die. The females then lay their eggs in to the water – and all die still in their tight aggregations.
