Our twelve chosen insects are common and recognizable representatives of several of the main insect orders, and they illustrate a variety of behaviour and life-cycles in different habitats. Some of the species are the commonest of their group and are used to illustrate it but cannot easily be distinguished from closely related species that look very similar. A few of these insects are more likely to be seen in domestic gardens or in the early evening. However – with some preliminary ‘scouting’ – it should be possible to find at least three or four of these species in or around a school, or on an off-site visit, during late June.
